Spring 2021 First Impressions – Blue Reflection Ray

Streaming: Funimation

Episodes: 24

Source: Game

Story Summary: Ruka is a quiet girl with a longing to connect with others but an inability to do so effectively. She carries regrets with her after transferring schools, and can’t seem to change her situation for the better. When her roommate Hiori returns through the window of their shared dorm room after an absence, Ruka is immediately struck by her natural, outgoing nature. Though they are very different people, they seem to share a connection; the ring that Ruka found dropped on the ground one afternoon seems to make a pair with one that Hiori received from her sister’s belongings, and both house a power that neither could have imagined.

Winter 2021 New Anime – Premieres for Monday, January 4th 2021

Hello friends! So it seems the season has started in earnest now. I, for one, am excited to see whether anything I was excited about actually pans out. We’ll see!

I’m going to be prioritizing non-sequel material for the time being, as I’d rather get a handle on the unknowns rather than the familiar anime about which we’ve probably already made our decisions. Hopefully I’ll be able to carve out some time to talk about my favorite sequel premieres, too.

I’m attempting to group premieres together by premiere date; if a lot of shows premiere on the same date I may have to break some of them into multiple parts. I’m still testing out this change in format and hope to land on something that works for the long term.

Autumn 2020 First Impressions – Assault Lily Bouquet

Girls battle against an alien threat and become partners destined for one-another.

Streaming: Funimation

Episodes: TBA

Source: Original (part of a mixed-media franchise based on a line of figurines)

Summary: Half a century ago, Earth was attacked by terrible monsters called the “Huge.” Humanity’s only defense were the powerful Lilies, young women able to fight using weaponry called CHARMS, fusions of magic and Science. Riri Hitotsuyanagi was rescued by a Lily during an evacuation two years ago, and was inspired to become the very thing that she idolized. Unfortunately, her untrained skills meant that her entrance into Yurigaoka Girls’ School, a “garden” that raises future Lilies, was anything but assured. Luckily, she managed to make it off the waitlist and begin onto the path toward achieving her dream.

As Riri makes her way to the campus entrance ceremony, the politics of Lily life become apparent. The girls vie for partnerships with their powerful peers, while also-rans like Riri sit on the sidelines. Soon news of an escaped Huge specimen makes its way to the new students, and those with battle experience are called upon to help. Riri finds herself swept into the action with Kaede and Yuyu – the very girl who came to Riri’s rescue two years ago. Though Riri is inexperienced, her natural talents prove to be valuable and the threat is vanquished. Kaede is suddenly smitten with Riri, while Yuyu is left to ponder some complicated emotions.

Autumn 2018 First Impressions – Bloom Into You

Yū has always loved shōjo manga and awaits the day she gets a love confession that sends her heart aflutter with bubbles and blushes, and yet when a junior high classmate confesses his feelings to her, she feels nothing. Disappointed and confused, Yū enters high school still unsure how to respond. That’s when Yū sees the beautiful student council president Nanami turn down a suitor with such maturity that she’s inspired to ask her for help. But then the next person to confess to Yū is Nanami herself.ANN

Streaming: HIDIVE

Episodes: 12

Source: Manga

Episode Summary: Yuu has always enjoyed the romance in the manga she reads and the music she listens to, but has never genuinely felt those same feelings in her own life. Though one of her classmates confessed his feelings towards her after they graduated from junior high, Yuu’s answer has been up in the air since then because she hasn’t felt inspired enough to respond in the manner she feels is truthful. One day Yuu is “recruited” to help the student council, and wanders the school grounds looking for their out-of-the-way office. She witnesses a boy’s confession to an upperclassman who, though she answers in the negative, lets the young man down with such grace and dignity that Yuu is incredibly impressed.

The senpai, Nanami, is herself a member of the student council. She explains to Yuu that she’s not interested in romance and plans to stay single throughout high school. The two end up working together fairly closely over the next several days, until the time comes for Yuu to speak to her potential suitor. Due to Nanami’s influence, she’s able to reject him truthfully and with kindness. But a surprising transformation seems to take place – Nanami now seems smitten with Yuu, and confesses those feelings to her. As the days go on, that momentary awkwardness seems to fade into memory, but Yuu still wonders how to address them.
